This band differs from the others not only by the style of performance, but also by the musicians – everyone knows that the legendary guitarist Michael Amott plays in Arch Enemy. They become more and more popular with each album, and each new album is really better than the previous ones. Some hardcore metal fans may not like the softening of Arch Enemy’s style, but everyone else likes it, and the band is really getting more popular.

Cannibal Corpse

Everyone has probably heard of these guys. At least, the name of this band, written in chalk or paint, can be found on every fence, more or less long. They make not heavy, but very heavy music, which can be listened to only by those who are true fans of the genre. Well, or those who just pay tribute to fashion and listen to Cannibal Corpse just because they have to.

Mastodon

Well, it’s not exactly a Death Metal band, but nevertheless, there is enough metal in their work to make the band to get into this top. Yes, this is probably the most Death Metal band of all. In any case, the told above precisely refers to the style of the band, and, well, of course, to the music. One only has to look at the lead singer, who has an inverted cross tattooed on his forehead, and everything at once becomes clear.

Their brutality surpasses almost every band represented in the top, but their solos are something. If you want a clear impression of the guys’ work, listen to “Homage for Satan.” Hardly anyone will dispute their place on the list.

Death

Naturally, this band takes the first place, as they are practically the founders of the Death Metal style. The band’s name speaks for itself. By the way, their music is rather beautiful and not so brutal as the music of another band called Death.

After listening several compositions from their work, at once it becomes clear, that the musicians put their heart and soul into their compositions. That’s probably why they are so popular.

Progressive metal is, to put it mildly, a very heterogeneous sub-genre of metal. Wikipedia writes about the huge difference between the sound of many bands and cites King’s X and Opeth as examples. But it’s much more interesting: it’s easy to find an abyss of differences between neighboring tracks from the same band on the same album. In prog metal, even pieces of the same song often sound like they are from five different genres.

To make it a little easier for you to navigate through the chaos, here are albums, which we recommend to listen to for those who are not familiar with this prog-metal. Yes, it is not possible to cover all forms of progressive metal, it is too diverse – but you will get acquainted with many great representatives of this genre.

There is a rule in the list: one band – one album. Albums will go in a weird order, from more old-fashioned sounding to more modern, from quieter to more extreme and growling. Even if this is a very conventional scheme, it will still be easier for many people to start with something more familiar than death metal with jazz harmonies.

Voivod – Nothingface

In a nutshell, progressive metal was born in the mid-80s when bands like Fates Warning and Queensrÿche experimented with heavy, thrash and speed metal. They gradually added ideas from progressive rock – that is, experiments with composition structures, non-standard rhythms and melodies, unusual tuning of instruments, elements of folk, jazz, baroque music and other music of past eras.
So let the first album in the selection be Nothingface from 1989 by the Canadian band Voivod. It’s already like just a heavier version of prog-rock – which is especially emphasized by the cover of Astronomy Domine by Pink Floyd. Thrash metal with unconventional for it riffs, futuristic sound, absence of verse-chorus structure, cardinal change of rhythm within the songs.

King’s X – Gretchen Goes To Nebraska

We propose to close the prog metal theme of the 80’s with the album Gretchen Goes To Nebraska impregnated with Christian allegories. In its time it was not very popular, but years later you can see how King’s X anticipated the sound of many prog metal bands. Not as fast-paced or aggressive sounding as their more nascent peers, but more varied in sound and more instruments: in addition to the usual electric guitars and drums King’s X used wood flute, sitar and dulcimer.

Dream Theater – Images and Words

Dream Theater essentially took the work of their predecessors and improved on literally every aspect that distinguishes the style. As a result, their record defined for decades to come what much of prog metal would sound like. The album’s first song, Pull Me Under, is almost the most famous composition of the subgenre, and has been inspired by many hundreds of musicians. And John Petrucci became the most famous guitarist of progressive metal.

Umpfel – Cactus

To avoid getting stuck in prog metal classics for a long time, let’s take a short trip from 1989 to 2015 and listen to Umpfel’s debut album. This is probably the least known band on the list – but their debut album can still be called one of the best prog metal records of the decade: you don’t often see so much energy and cheerfulness in a subgenre. Let’s continue with the even darker Second Life Syndrome, which actually turned Riverside into one of the major prog metal bands of the “noughties.” Whatever they play, everything is rich and savory – even when the lyrical protagonist of the song is filled with endless sadness. And when they play despair – hang on, it will be performed with all the passion possible.

Rishloo – Living as Ghosts with Buildings as Teeth

Another young representative of modern progressive metal, dramatic and fickle. Listen at least to the way the melodies in the song Dead Rope Machine shimmer.

It starts out calm, albeit melancholic. Then the passions escalate sharply – and soon it’s back to normal in just two seconds. After a while, the cycle repeats – but then the song turns into a scream and an almost random drumbeat, which seamlessly transitions into a rhythmic, quiet melody. The tempo of the rhythm grows and grows, everything transforms into screaming and chaos again, and then everything dies down, leaving only a quiet, sad guitar overdubbing.

In many respects it is for such compositions that one wants to listen to prog-metal.

Opeth – Blackwater Park

The real masterpiece and the album worth listening to for everyone who is just getting acquainted with prog metal. Rolling growling and classic clean vocals, aggressive death metal and melancholic acoustic guitar riffs – it’s even amazing how Mikael Okerfeldt, the band leader, manages to combine all this so organically that sometimes you don’t even notice the transitions between the songs with completely different sounding and you just enjoy it.

Gojira – From Mars to Sirius

Here we get to the really “heavy” music in the selection. Technical death metal with an admixture of groove and industrial makes the band sound really thunderous, just like its name (“Gojira” is the original Japanese name of Godzilla). The inclusions of serene melodies and abrupt rhythm changes only emphasize the horror of the album’s main theme – climate change.

Devin Townsend – Terria

And I’d like to finish this selection with Devin Townsend’s solo album. This is one of the first records where his totally unlike anything else style was fully developed, in which uplifting peacefulness and sarcastic extremity can be so energetically combined. His unique voice alone is worth mentioning: there are not many people on earth who can instantly switch from growling and screaming to pure, almost operatic vocals – and then back again, while managing to play the guitar at the same time.

The 1990s were the period of “crossovers” for metal – mixing and interpenetration with other styles of music. At that time many bands were formed that combined metal with classical symphonic music, folk music, progressive rock, gothic rock and other traditional genres.

Progressive metal

At the end of the 1980s progressive metal developed from the combination of progressive rock and various kinds of metal in the works of Dream Theater, Queensrÿche. Its distinctive features are the complex structure of compositions, bizarre musical sizes, unexpected rhythm changes, as well as the professional technique of playing the musical instruments. Progressive metal is characterized by long songs and conceptual albums. In the 1990s and 2000s the genre developed in the works of Ayreon, Symphony X and Opeth. Like power, progressive metal tends to be conceptual in albums.

The further development of progressive music gave birth to such experimental varieties of progressive, cavant-garde metal and post-metal, in which the element of metal is only one of many components. Bands like Ulver and Arcturus, which started out as extreme metal bands, later created unique mixtures of metal with genres and instruments far removed from metal music.

Gothic Metal

Gothic metal emerged as an offshoot of doom metal in the early and mid-1990s. Doom metal bands Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride were involved in its emergence. Gothic metal is a combination of gothic rock and doom metal. Brutal doom metal vocals are often combined with clean, classic female vocals in duets dubbed “Beauty and the Beast”, accompanied by slow, heavy riffs. Clean male vocals also occur. In the mid and late 1990s this line was developed by Lacrimosa, Theatre of Tragedy, Tristania, Lacuna Coil and others. The aesthetics of gothic metal moved away from post-punk and approached a more aristocratic, in the spirit of gothic novels and the Victorian era.

Symphonic Metal

In the mid-1990s, under the influence of gothic metal, doom metal and progressive metal, a genre combining metal and classical music emerged. Sympho-metal bands use academic (“opera”) vocals, chorus, symphonic musical instruments or their imitation with a synthesizer. Often the sympho-metal bands perform with whole orchestras and a lot of singers with different voices. Therion from Sweden is considered to be the founder of the style, which was the first band to fully combine traditional metal with orchestra and opera vocals.

The genre was especially spread in Europe, many bands who played power metal (Nightwish, Rhapsody), gothic metal (Within Temptation, After Forever, Epica), folk metal (Turisas) started to use symphonic and keyboard arrangements in their music. Symphonic black metal (Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Graveworm) emerged at the junction with black metal. By the end of the 2000s symphonic became one of the most popular metal genres in Europe, especially in Scandinavia (Leaves’ Eyes) and Central Europe (Edenbridge, Delain, Xandria).

Folk-metal

Folk metal is a genre that blends folk music and metal. In this genre, folk instruments are usually added to the traditional guitar lineup of the band: flutes, violins, accordions and bagpipes.

This experiment was first demonstrated by Skyclad in the early 1990s, who mixed Celtic music with thrash metal. Also among the early representatives were Amorphis, who introduced elements of Finnish folk music into death-doom metal.

In the mid-1990s there were local scenes within the genre. German folk metal bands mixed industrial metal (Neue Deutsche Harte) with medieval musical instruments (Subway to Sally, In Extremo, Tanzwut). In Israel, “oriental metal” containing elements of Arabic music (Orphaned Land, Melechesh) emerged. In Ireland, Celtic metal emerged (Cruachan, Primordial). In the early 2000s, a new wave of bands from Scandinavia created their own folk metal, mixed with Viking/Peigan metal. Famous bands, playing at the intersection of these genres, appeared in Finland (Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Moonsorrow, Ensiferum), Sweden (Otyg, Vintersorg), Norway (Trollfest).

Heavy bulky riffs, hurricane hammering of twin drums, inhuman horrible growls spewing out of human throats, spewing out words covered in blood, covered with pieces of meat and guts, soaked with the vile stench of rotting corpses… That’s it, harsh extreme “death metal”, the great and terrible Death Metal.

Let us remember how this style began.

Aggression of thrash, anger of black metal, dirtiness and baseness of hardcore – in such atmosphere death metal appeared in the middle of 80s, in which all these qualities were amplified several times. But the main component of this genre, strange as it may seem, is the most usual heavy metal, although there is nothing common between them at first sight. Slayer, Venom, Celtic Frost, Kreator, who are considered the main cultivators of the idea, had a great influence on the formation of death metal. And the main and first death bands were Possessed from San Francisco County and a band from Orlando with the symbolic name Death.

It was Possessed that connected all the dots that had been previously arranged in a mess by various metal heroes. In 1985 they released their debut album Seven Churches, in which they presented a heavier version of thrash that transcended the genre. A little later journalists called the band the first death metal band. However, the team that was active at the same time in Florida – Mantas – could claim this title with much more success. That was the name of Chuck Schuldiner’s project, which later changed its name to Death. Back in 1984 they released four demos and live on cassette tapes with a vocal manner as close as possible to what would later be called growling.

Had the Mantas recorded a studio album, it would hardly have been the same pure death that was heard on the band’s 1985 debut record Death. It was another in-between project between genres, like Possessed, but it was closer to death at the expense of fat overdrive and deeper growls.

But Mantas remained a teenage amateur trio that didn’t come out of the basement, which is why Possessed is considered the first step. After all, it’s one thing to be the first, but not to present your work to the general public, and it’s quite another to have a professional, officially released work that begins to influence followers. And the Mantas are nothing more than a precursor to Death.

Possessed were more extreme than their metal counterparts, being on the edge of thrash and death, leaving a dirty guitar overdrive in their sound. This ensemble was the first to open the gate, in which a little later the roaring torrent of new heavy music fell on the heads of enthusiastic public. They opened the gate, but didn’t enter the band as a whole; they only took a step into the future of metal. Nevertheless, their step became a landmark for the whole genre. The band’s debut, titled Seven Churches, was innovative. Bassist and vocalist Jeff Beserra used growling for the first time in an official release.

However, Beserra’s hoarse screams are not the juicy growl of Barney Greenaway on the first Benediction album or George Fisher, the current Cannibal Corpse frontman, but they are not the scream of Tom Araya, not to mention the melodic vocals of Daddy Hatfield. The accompaniment has largely remained within the thrash framework. However, if before it was possible to set certain limits, nowadays almost every trend has expanded to such an extent and took so many different guises, that the notion of “genre purity” has become almost conditional.

Seven Churches was the band’s only success. Their next album did not reach the level of the debut, disappointing fans and critics, and soon after that the band broke up. And that’s another reason why Schuldiner’s Death is more significant for death. Each of their subsequent albums continued and built on past developments, had some success, and are now all considered classics of the genre.

Both their debuts, Possessed and Death, were produced by the same specialist, Randy Barnes. Thus, Randy turned out to be a kind of “grey cardinal” of death, contributing just as much to the birth of the new genre.

Death was the first band to introduce the genre in its purest form. Chuck Schuldiner and drummer Chris Reifert honed the ideas of their predecessors to the point where the new music gained an identity, a name of its own, and a platform for further free development. At the same time, they laid the foundation for the development of a subgenre that would emerge a little later – progressive-death, metal-fusion, later developed by such bands as Atheist and Sadist. Sometimes it is also called jazz-death, jazz-metal.

The debut album, Scream Bloody Gore, was released in May 1987, and by that time the style was almost complete. This disc was the final step.

Like almost all successful debuts, Death’s debut also did not avoid force majeure. At that time there were only Chuck and drummer Chris Reifert in the line-up. Another Death member, John Hand, even though he is listed as the rhythm-guitarist on the record’s cover, cannot be counted, since he did not take part in this or any other record and never played a single gig as a member of Death. Since 1987, Hand did not show any signs of creative life until 2010, when Death Resurrected was presented to the world. Therefore, we can only mention him in passing as one of the members of the early line-up.

Reifert joined the band in 1986, replacing drummer Erik Brecht, and made his first appearance in the demo known as Rehearsal Tape #13, recorded on March 10. After the release of Scream Bloody Gore, he left the band and started his own, which later became a legend of the genre – Autopsy.

Autopsy, along with Death and Possessed, is considered the third band who founded Death Metal. Although, to be fair, they should be considered pioneers rather than founders, as they started to play actively after the first two bands had become famous. In 1987-88 Reifert’s band released only seven songs in two demos, but the debut album was released only in 1989, when the genre was already thundering all over the world, and Death was already preparing their third program. But it was the breakthrough of their career, and the band entered their name in bloody ink into the annals of death.

The undisputed king of the genre today is an American band Cannibal Corpse, which since 1988 has been slashing brutal, vicious death in almost unchanged form, delighting its fans with its uncompromising, energy and inexhaustible power every time.

Metalcore is a broad musical genre that combines extreme metal and hardcore punk. The name is a word-merger of the names of the two genres that make it up. It is distinguished by its emphasis on breakdowns, that is, slow lapses in the songs, pushing you towards mosh.

Early bands like Hogan’s Heroes, Earth Crisis and Integrity lean more towards punk, while modern bands like Killswitch Engage, Underoath, All That Remains, Trivium, As I Lay Dying, Bullet for My Valentine and The Devil Wears Prada lean more towards metal.

Sepultura, the band that “laid the foundations” of the genre, and Pantera, which influenced Trivium, Atreyu, Bleeding Through and Unearth, are considered influential in the development of metalcore.

Hardcore punk pioneers Black Flag and Bad Brains were fans and recreated the sound of the metal band Black Sabbath in their works. British street-punk bands Discharge and The Exploited were also inspired by metal. The album “Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood” by the hardcore band

The Misfits had a decisive influence on thrash metal. However, punk and metal remained separate currents in the first half of the 1980s, until the crossover thrash scene and its representatives – Corrosion of Conformity, Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, Suicidal Tendencies. This scene influenced representatives of New York hardcore, like Cro-Mags, Murphy’s Law, Agnostic Front, Warzone. In 1986 Bad Brains demonstrated hardcore breakdowns while combining reggae and metal on the album I Against I.

Early Metalcore (1990s)

Between 1989 and 1995 a new wave of hardcore bands emerged. It included the bands Merauder, All Out War, Integrity, Biohazard, Earth Crisis, Converge, Shai Hulud, Starkweather, Judge, Strife, Rorschach, Vision of Disorder and Hatebreed.

Vocals

Typically, a scream is used as the primary vocal style. This was especially noticeable among the bands of the 1990s. Nowadays, most of the bands add choruses or even verses, sung with “clean” vocals, to the scream. In many ways, this manner came about because of the influence of emo on the genre.

Music

Speedy guitar riffs and the use of gimbal or double bass drumming are staples in metalcore. Guitars’ scale is usually lowered, Drop D, Drop C, Drop B are used. On the drums it is often possible to hear the technique of blast beats.

Ideology

Since initially the scene of metalcore was formed around hardcore punk, then the roots of the ideology of metalcore are in this genre. Mainly artists from hardcore-punk took ideology of straight age, but there were some exceptions like Integrity and Converge. Converge based their lyrics on personal experiences and failed love. Integrity frontman David Helion proclaimed the “Church of the Holy Terror of the Last Judgement”, which he took from the Cathar and Gnostic systems. At the same time, Christianity is very common in metalcore. Many members of famous bands position themselves as religious Christians, for example: the members of Zao, The Devil Wears Prada, As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red, Texas in July, Demon Hunter, Oh, Sleeper and Underoath.

Matcore

Matcore emerged in the mid-1990s with the work of such bands as Converge, Botch and The Dillinger Escape Plan. The term itself was coined by analogy with mat-rock. Matkor is characterized by high speed, technicality of performance and unusual rhythm. Some bands, such as Fear Before, for example, add a lot of progressive elements to their music.

Melodic Metalcore

At the beginning of 1990 the third wave of metalcore bands began to form. These bands distinctive feature was much more melodic composition and close relationship with post-hardcore bands. The main basis for this was the mixing of metalcore with melodic death metal, mostly of the Swedish scene like bands like At the Gates, Arch Enemy, In Flames and Soilwork, and in some cases emo. The leading bands of this wave are As I Lay Dying, Trivium, All That Remains, Atreyu, Bullet for My Valentine, Darkest Hour, Eighteen Visions, Killswitch Engage and Poison the Well. Due to the wide popularity of these bands, metalcore entered into the mainstream as a genre, so at the moment the term is understood as the third wave of the genre. Most of the bands of melodic metalcore perform the main vocal parts with clean vocals. According to an article in Revolver magazine, melodic metalcore is an infusion of typical 80’s metal clichés into modern hardcore.

Deathcore

With the growth of metalcore popularity, some lines of the latter have penetrated into death metal. The bands Suicide Silence, Carnifex, Salt the Wound and Job for a Cowboy combined metalcore and death metal. This subgenre combines speed drums (including blast beats), low-tuned guitars, tremolo and growling from death metal with screaming, melodic riffs and breakdowns from metalcore. According to Decibel magazine, Suffocation’s work was the basis for the emergence of deathcore.

Let us define what “metal” itself is. Metal is a musical genre, a kind of rock music, which formed in the early and middle 1970s, mainly in Britain and the USA, and spread all over the world. The typical features of metal are distortion distorted electric guitars, long guitar solos, energetic rhythm, as a rule, six, eight or two measure, lightweight riffs.

Metal is rather various and has a lot of styles (subgenres) beginning from comparatively “soft” (classical heavy metal, power metal) (we leave the “softness” on the conscience of those who first thought it up) up to very “heavy” and difficult for the perception of the unprepared listener (death metal, black metal, grindcore). Different elements are characteristic for different subgenres. For example, vocals range from clean and high in traditional subgenres to growling and screaming of extreme ones; speed, heaviness and complexity also vary. Songs in metal often focus on energetic, masculine themes such as war, historical heroes, sci-fi or horror, but you can also find lyrics on any other topics. Metal music is common in almost all countries, but the biggest scenes were formed in northern Europe (Britain, Scandinavia, Germany) and North America (USA, Canada). In all European countries, there are developed regional scenes, as well as in Brazil, Japan, Mexico and many other non-European countries. In the Middle East, with the exception of Israel and Turkey, heavy rock is less developed because of strict censorship restrictions. Metal fans are called metalheads. Now let’s move directly to the enumeration and brief description of styles, genres, etc., inherent to this type of music. Avant-garde metal – one of the metal trends, which absorbed elements of progressive metal, extreme metal, death metal and other subgenres of metal. It is characterized by a large number of musical experiments with sounds, instruments and the structure of the songs. typical representative of this style is the Swedish band Avatar.

Art Metal – at least, there is an opinion, that the creativity of Queensryche is just art metal…

Black Metal – this style originated in the 1980s as an offshoot of thrash metal. The bands Venom and Bathory are considered to be the pioneers of the style.

Viking metal is a kind of metal music based on Scandinavian culture and mythology. Examples are Falkenbach, Gjeldrune, Turisas, Bathory.

Glam metal is a fusion of hard rock and heavy metal, as well as glitter metal. It began in the US in the late 1970s – early 1980s. Such bands as Cinderella, Poison, Faster Pussycat, Bon Jovi and Motley Crue are the bright representatives of these styles.

Gothic Metal is a genre, a kind of metal that combines the viscosity and gloominess of doom metal with the melancholy, musical and artistic techniques of gothic rock. Music of this genre is usually notable for its low or medium tempo, gloomy atmosphere and frequent use of keyboards. Vocals can be clean or extreme, you can find such duets as “Beauty and the Beast” – combination of clean female vocal with male growling. Examples of the performers are Lacuna Coil, Theatre of Tragedy.

Groove Metal – is the subgenre of thrash metal, which appeared in the first half of 1990s. The most notable representatives of this style are Five Finger Death Punch and Texas Hippie Coalition.

Dark Metal – a trend, a sub-style of metal, which first appeared in the late 1980s and formed by 1994. There is not only one style of dark metal. The first albums of this genre can be found in Germany, Brazil, Greece, USA, Switzerland and other countries. Dark Metal is mostly characterized by the combination of elements of aggressive sub-styles of metal music: black, death and doom metal with the occult “ritual” atmosphere. Lyrics, as a rule, refer to the themes of the occult, despair and suicide. In this way, dark metal has adopted a lot of extreme metal.

Desert-rock – actually, this style can’t be called purely “metal”, despite the presence of elements of sludge metal, hard rock and doom metal. The name comes from the Southern California town of Palm Desert.

Doom metal is a style, an extreme sub-genre of metal with a predominance of slow tempos. Both music and lyrics in this genre are meant to express a sense of despair, fear and doom. In this style we can distinguish such subgenres as epic doom metal, death doom metal, funeral doom metal and the already mentioned black doom metal.

Death metal (other variants: death metal, death metal) is an extreme subgenre of metal. Having absorbed the speed and complexity of thrash metal, death metal evolved into a separate subgenre of this genre (sometimes called proto-death), and then into an independent genre in the mid-1980s. Within this genre we can separate such styles as death metal, death thrash, melodic death metal, techno death metal, brutal death metal, brutal satanic death metal, sympho death metal, progressive death metal, death death death metal, deathcore, melodic deathcore, death and roll and deathgrind.

Celtic metal is an offshoot of folk metal that originated in the mid-90s in Ireland. Celtic metal combines the sound of metal and Celtic music. Such bands as Cruachan, Primordial and Waylander are pioneers of the genre. Nowadays the representatives of this genre are not only Irish, but bands from many other countries as well.

Mat-metal (mathematical metal) – the direction of metal, characterized by atonality, complex structure of compositions and usage of non-standard musical sizes.

Matcore – rhythmically complex and dissonant style, originating in metalcore. Neoclassical metal – a fusion of heavy metal and classical music. Oriental Metal/Eastern

Metal is a subgenre of folk metal, which began in the mid-90s in Israel, Singapore and Armenia. The Israeli bands Orphaned Land, Melechesh, Salem, Singapore’s Rudra, and Armenia’s Ayas pioneered the genre. Power Metal is one of the metal genres that emerged in the second half of the 1980s.

The main attributes of the genre are speed, complexity and melodic guitar parts, clean high vocals and backing vocals. Such subgenres as symphonic power metal, progressive power metal, heavy power metal, extreme power metal and melodic power metal are distinguished within this genre.

Pirate Metal – as can be seen from the name, the theme of the songs of the bands, working in this style, is entirely dedicated to the sea pirates of the past and everything, connected with them.

Pagan Metal is the style of metal, which exploits the elements of paganism. Within this style we can distinguish Slavic pagan metal (Temnozor, Arkona, Alkonost, Butterfly Temple), Baltic pagan metal (Poccolus, Obtest) and Indian pagan metal. Post-metal is a genre that is a mixture of such genres as post-rock and metal, rooted in progressive rock and industrial. The genre is mainly characterized by a distorted guitar sound familiar to metal, a dark atmosphere, a gradual evolution of song structure and minimal vocal expressiveness.

Progressive Metal is a style of metal based on progressive rock which includes complex compositional structures, bizarre musical sizes and intriguing techniques of playing musical instruments. The high level of professionalism of the musicians is often combined with the lyrical in the form of conceptual epic lyrics, the result of which are quite long songs and concept albums.

Symphonic Metal – a style that seamlessly combines metal and symphonic orchestral music. The brightest representatives of this style are Therion, Epica, Within’ Temptation. Sludge Metal is an extreme style of music which combines elements of doom metal and hardcore punk. Within this genre the styles of southern sludge and stoner sludge are distinguished.

Speed metal is a genre, one of the directions of metal, which is located at the intersection of traditional heavy metal, thrash metal and power metal. Speed metal became an important stage in the development of metal music, but it never evolved into an independent movement with its own aesthetics and separate fandom. As a rule, not all bands can be referred to this genre, but some albums and songs of different bands, which are also playing thrash, power or heavy metal. Speed metal is characterized by a fairly high speed of execution (more than the “classic” heavy metal). The speed metal genre is characterized by the high tempo and short solo guitar parts between the verse. The vocals in speed metal are usually more aggressive than in heavy metal, they can be husky and with splitting of the ligaments (screaming), as well as low and high-pitched falsetto.

Stoner metal is a style, which is characterized by slow or medium-tempo music with low-tuned guitars and bass. It includes elements of psychedelic rock, blues rock, and doom metal with repetitive guitar riffs. Stoner rock emerged in the early 1990s from the work of the California band Kuyss. The style had a big influence on many bands such as Metallica (on the albums Load, Reload), Soundgarden, Corrosion of Conformity, etc. This is a musical genre in metal which had given rise to the extreme varieties of metal. It is characterized by a fairly high speed of execution, more hardness of the punchy, fast rhythmical figures (riffs) performed in a low range of frequencies compared to classical heavy metal, and aggression together with technical, choppy, flailing, high-speed style of guitar solos in a high range of frequencies and bass guitar tremolo. The vocal lines often dissonant with the instrumental texture, although in general the vocal manner, though quite forced and expressive (often there are quite low, manly voices), cannot be called anti-musical. The lyrics often abound in attempts to criticize the social order, often related to various manifestations of social injustice. The lyrics often use crude means of language, which partially overlap and are close to thrash metal and hardcore. Within the genre, there is also crossover thrash, which is either a form of thrash metal or hardcore punk, which has influenced each other or is a mixture of them. Folk metal is the genre of metal, which absorbed elements of folk music. Besides separated from it Celtic metal and oriental metal, we should mention such its subgenres as medieval metal, Latin folk metal, Slavic folk metal, Nordic folk metal, American folk metal, German folk metal and the so-called “battle metal”.

Heavy metal is a genre of rock music, the first and original direction of metal. Usually this word is called “classic” metal as it was created in the 1970s by such bands as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. Sometimes “heavy metal” abroad is referred to as all metal in general, and its original form is called “traditional heavy metal” or “classic metal”.

Industrial Metal – a related musical genre which emerged in the late 1980s in the United States and Western Europe at the junction of mutual influence of different currents of post-industrial on the one hand, heavy and thrash metal on the other hand and hardcore-punk on the third. The most significant artists who have had an influence on the formation of the genre are considered to be Ministry, Godflesh and KMFDM.

To the specific features of this genre we can mention the use of “metal” riffs, “industrial” synthesizers and sequencer, very distorted guitars and vocals with distortion effects (although in some cases we can also hear some clean sound). Within it we can consider such sub-styles as industrial thrash, industrial black metal and industrial death metal.

Grunge metal is a sub-style of alt-rock that evolved from hardcore punk and heavy metal in the mid-1980s in the American state of Washington, primarily Seattle, and nearby cities. In addition to all of these styles and genres, the following styles of metal should also be mentioned:

In the second half of the 60s in Great Britain the legendary band Cream gave birth to a new, previously unseen style – hard rock, which was an energetic, hard rhythm and blues, characterized by the special sound of “overloaded” electric guitars with a distorted sound. The then unknown band Led Zeppelin continued the development of this direction. Refusing to become a Cream clone, LZ has adopted many of the harmonic lines and techniques of black blues, especially in terms of creating a tense, dramatic sound, which, combined with folk motifs, makes it extremely rich, dense, physically heavy, with a powerful rhythm section and flamboyant, virtuoso guitar, which carefully “writes out” every sound. To this day. Led Zeppelin is the only band you can’t compare it to and can’t be confused with anyone else.

But don’t think that rock music was driven only by two bands. The album “In Rock” by DEEP PURPLE, released in 1970, told the world that rock music had come of age, reaching almost academic heights. Long compositions with complex harmonic structure, a lot of changing dimensions and guitar riffs, deep and serious lyrics came to replace the radio format of the three-minute rock’n’roll song which was popular in the beginning of the 60’s. For the first time all band members had their own solo parts, allowing the audience to fully explore their musical and technical abilities… The virtuoso organ, hard guitar and inimitable vocal produced a rock fans were so unforgettable that they called Perple’s music progressive rock, as the term “hard rock” did not exist by that time! By the way, the stylistic description “progressive” stuck to all the bands which continued the DP cause in the part of playing “serious”, melodically and technically perfect rock music (DREAM THEATER, CRIMSON GLORY, FATES WARNING, MAJESTIC).

BLACK SABBATH. Everyone has probably heard this combination. A true titan of rock music, whose contribution to the further development of diverse musical iron is almost unmeasurable.

Unlike their comrades-in-arms, BS did not focus on speed, slowing down and making their music as heavy as possible. The visiting card of the band since far 1969 and up to this day are rough sound, gloomy music and lyrics, shrill and forced vocals, usage of witchcraft, mystic and cemetery themes, massive crosses on musicians’ necks. Subsequently, the style of BLACK SABBATH got the name of stoner, which is in tune with the “stone heaviness” of the sound and found its followers in KYUSS and CATHEDRAL.

Nowadays, hard rock as a style of music-making almost never occurs in its pure form. The memory of the classic sound is preserved by the few hard rock supergroups that are still functional (DEEP PURPLE, BLACK SABBATH, URIAH HEEP).

In the early 1980s one of the branches of hard rock became widespread: heavy metal. It represents the most commercialized direction in rock of the 1980s. The aggregate of all the “heavy” music was called hard and heavy. According to the “gravity” of the sound, techniques and speed of performance, as well as the themes of the texts, speed metal, black metal and thrash metal are distinguished. The most commercially successful form of hard and heavy metal is so-called “melodic” or “harmonic metal”, which is closer to pop-music. Typical representatives are EUROPE, POISON and the late SCORPIONS.

Like hard rock itself, heavy metal was the brainchild of Great Britain, arising as a subconscious reaction to the dominance of unprofessional and commercially untenable punk rock, which took place in the second half of the 70s in England. The punk aversion of musicians, many of whom started their careers in hard rock bands, however, did not prevent them from adopting an incredible punk speed and critical attitude to the surrounding reality as the basis of the new style. These ingredients multiplied by hard rock’s fluency, toughness, melodicism and dark romanticism made up a mixture that captivated young people from the first chords. The number of bands who wanted to play such music grew so fast, that by the end of the 70s the whole world was talking about “New Wave Of British Heavy Metal”, and the list of new trendsetters grew day by day. Among the most outstanding are SAMSON, PRAYING MANTIS (who were reborn in the early ’90s and released several records), DIAMOND HEAD (together with HOLOCAUST and BLITZKREIG who inspired the young tennis player Lars Ulrich to drop his racket and play drums), as well as the young monsters MOTORHEAD, JUDAS PRIEST and IRON MAIDEN. In the beginning of the 80s heavy metal bands began to appear in continental Europe and Scandinavia, the bright example of which can be the impressive works of Danish MERCIFUL FATE and King Diamond’s solo works (the first consistent Russian heavy metal work was the album of “Aria” band in 1985 “Magnificence Mania”). After all said above, it is hardly surprising that for a decade heavy metal has bravely kept the bar of primacy on the world heavy scene.

The tradition of heavy metal is continued by power metal, the homeland of which is Germany and the progenitors are HELLOWEEN, ACCEPT and BLIND GUARDIAN. In general romantic and harsh melodic orientation of its predecessor power metal is characterized by even higher speed, extensive use of keyboards and “academic” instruments, a variety of male and female vocals and the connection with traditions of classical or folk music (an example of that – creativity of the Italian power players RHAPSODY or Finnish “melodic-opera-metalists” NIGHTWISH with the vocalist Tarja Turunen) and movement towards progressive or folk-metal, taking inspiration in traditional folk melodic. The last years of XX century brought a wave of European power metal, the centers of which can be found, for example, in Italy (LABYRINTH, SKYLARK), Finland (STRATOVARIUS, FINTROLL), Sweden (HAMMERFALL).

Thrash Metal – is nothing else but the American answer to the British. It represents hammering and absolutely not melodic songs with milling guitar sound, “wet” bass guitar, barking, growling or screaming vocals, filling the lyrics with social problems, descriptions of murders, horrors of wars and satanic rituals, own neurosis and hatred for the whole world.

The work of American hardcore pioneers BLACK FLAG and CIRCLE JERKS contributed a lot to its formation. In spite of the fact that the priority of the thrash sound belongs to the METALLICA 1983 album “Kill” Em All”, within a couple of years the virus of decay has spread to all corners of America and Europe, leaving descendants with beautiful examples of the genre like Americans SLAYER, MEGADETH, POSESSED, M.O.D, ANTHRAX and Germans KREATOR, SODOM and DESTRUCTION. The most famous exponent of thrash tendencies on the Russian heavy scene of the last decade was probably Moscow’s early 90s band Corrosion of Metal…

In addition, as thrash sub-genres one can distinguish Angry metal (the classic of the genre is Phillip Anselmo’s band PANTERA, which is notable for its particularly aggressive choice of themes and material presentation), speed metal whose performers see their task as catching up with and surpassing the speed of sound (OVERKILL), techno metal using the arsenal of electronic music as an arrangement element (DIE KRUPPS) or rhythmic basis (RAMMSTEIN).

The appearance of death metal on the world heavy scene marked the further continuation and development of thrash idea. The centers of distribution of death metal contagion were Tampa in the American state of Florida (MORBID ANGEL, DEATH, DEICIDE, CANNIBAL CORPSE) and Stockholm in Sweden (HYPOCRISY, DISMEMBER), but despite the presence of two competing musical clans, there were more similarities than differences between American and European adepts of the genre.

Death metal, as well as all other extreme movements of the 90’s music appeared in the beginning of the decade as a musical response to the increasing extremism of public life. The increased cruelty of the world gave birth to an incredibly morbid lyricism, replete with details of sadistic rapes, murders, torture, and blatantly anti-Christian motives. The “clean” vocals were replaced by furious growling into a microphone, which distorted the words to such an extent that it became impossible to understand the lyrics without a text insert, the guitars were built one and a half to two tones below the classical harmony, and pictures were drawn on record covers, which even the liberal Scandinavian censorship forbade! Another extremely popular genre in the early 90s – grindcore owed its existence to the activity of American hardcore and English punk-extremists like CRASS and RUDIMENTARY PENI. The infernal mixture of high-speed and evil components gave birth to musical monsters, the most famous of which were CARCASS and NAPALM DEATH, famous for their torpedo-like speeds at the limit of human possibilities, buzzing guitars, psychopathic vocals, nauseating covers, and record titles like “A Faerie of Pathetic Anatomical Necrophilia”.

In the second half of the 90s death metal entered the phase of evolution, continuing to this day, which was largely caused by the fall of fans’ interest to its “classical” form, manifested in the active merging of death metal constructions with other styles of heavy music. This led to the genre of melodic death, which is much more commercially successful, combining growling vocals and original lyrics with melodic guitar arrangements (sometimes with two-guitar processing in a heavy metal vein), This was noticed, for example, by Swedish deathsters IN FLAMES and DARK TRANQUILITY), as well as the appearance of bands playing in the borderline styles of death-doom, deathgrind and death-black, using elements of death metal in the construction of their compositions and arrangements.

The foundation of doom metal was laid back in the 70’s by the seminal work of BLACK SABBATH, which proved that slow playing sounds not at all easier and not weaker than “fast” rock This idea has long found worthy incarnators in the face of PARADISE LOST, TIAMAT, MY DYING BRIDE, ANATHEMA, etc. Slow and heavy “doom” music duly reflected the twilight state of their creators’ soul, creating in listeners a gothic, solemn and funereal mood with the help of means, unusual for heavy music before – an abundance of keyboards, violins and flutes, acoustic guitars, female voices and choral arrangements of vocals.

“Lightened” version of doom metal is called atmospheric-doom (analogously for black metal – atmospheric-black) and differs from orthodox doom (black metal) by not so intensive sound, put forward on the foreground keyboard sound, complex arrangements and beautiful, sometimes quite commercial melody.

The most vicious offspring of heavy music, which went farthest in the propaganda of their own ideas and worldviews is black metal

Modern black metal was forming during two decades; the foundation for it was given by the British trio VENOM who in 1982 released the first record under the title “Black Metal”. In spite of the fact that in 1982 VENOM played aggressive heavy metal, far from the manner of modern black metal bands, the band succeeded in forming the ideology of future anti-Christians, playing their concerts with insightful hymns to Satan and other demons. The next step in the development of black metal ideas was linked with CELTIC FROST and BATHORY bands, experimenting with black-mystical themes (which grew in BATHORY into outright satanism) and over-the-top speeds. But if CELTIC FROST evolved into an art-metal formation by the end of their existence, then at the threshold of the 90s, BATHORY could be fairly fairly called a proto-black band, combining anti-Christian rhetoric, indecipherable screaming vocals and harsh recording quality.

A new wave of black metal rose in Norway in the person of MAYHEM, BURZUM and DARKTHRONE. The distinctive feature of the style was orientation on extremely rough and extreme sound. The vocals got the ripping and screaming intonations. This was accompanied by texts cursing Christianity and praising the beauty of the harsh northern nature. Also the band had to paint their faces in black and white and to make photos of ancient Viking weapons and set churches on fire.

Unusualness and extremity of the genre caused a lot of examples to follow, and since the mid-90s we can talk about the beginning of a global fashion to black metal. In the performance of such music distinguished mostly Scandinavians: worth to mention an impressive line-up of SATYRICON, and solo works of Satyr, including excellent folk-metal projects STORM and VONGRAVEN, “viking-metal” formation ENSLAVED, talented IMMORTAL, and also the Finns IMPALED NAZARENE.

Now our scene is dominated by new-metal (MARYLIN MANSON, LIMP BIZKIT), which is an extremely commercial musical activity aimed mostly at a teenage audience. The real roots of “new-metal” should be sought not in metal, but in the traditions of American glam, funk and hip-hop. In turn, new metal is divided into several genres. It is a rapcore which cultivates a mix of aggressive funk and hardcore rhythms with the peculiar to the rap culture technical arsenal and recitative vocal parts (LINKIN PARK, CRAZY TOWN), funkcore which is differed by a strong bias to the progressive funk music, This is the history of that rock music, which is characterized by a strong bias towards progressive funk music and classic rock and less aggressive pitch (INCUBUS, PAPA ROACH) and so-called “new school punk” which is a variation on the theme of pop-punk, assiduously cultivated by record companies like Epitaph and bands like GREEN DAY, OFFSPRING and BLINK 182.

That’s the history of the rock music we’re listening to now. As you can see, every year rock is becoming more and more commercial. More and more the emphasis is not on the quality of music, but on getting the money out of the fans. It’s understandable, everyone wants to make more money, but is there any future for rock with such an attitude?
